Is Crisis good !
Is Crisis good !
Humans are the quickest evolving species on the planet Earth. In the brief time since we have colonized this planet, we were defeated by our own greed for resources and power. Yet we have resolved those mistakes and overcome the hurdles. During each hurdle, we learned from the mistakes of the past and learned to evolve to prepare the next hurdle.
World has seen worse ciris than this one. Every time when we were challenged globally we evolved strongly by bringing progressive institutional frameworks and ideologies that could prepare humanity for the next challenge.
So Is Crisis Good? Yes, In deed.
Education sphere has seen a drastic paradigm shift in every aspect of conventional practices in the Indian Schooling system especially in Two and three tier cities where there are more students. Neither schools nor students were ready for this unprecedented transformation. The abrupt transition had revealed the reluctance of parents and students to learn in a new environment and questioned the adaptiveness of schools and teachers to teach in the most uncertain conditions. But eventually we have made our own gateways to continue the teaching learning process. It was wonderful to see teachers becoming learners.
So Is Crisis Good? Yes, In deed.
Changes that were brought by the pandemic would guide us to prepare for the future challenges. But the ground reality tells me a different story.Post lockdown, all stakeholders in education were super relieved to return to “Old Routine” from “New Normal”, except the students. Because of the exposure they got, the students now reached a new dimension in the learning process. Here starts the Challenge between Old Routine vs New Normal.
So Is Crisis Good? Hmmm, Maybe!!
Here is what is happening in the classrooms in Post Covid!
Early Rationality : Mute All (or) Engage All ?
For about a year and half students were away from peer influence. Rather they were deeply influenced by people who are older than them, mostly parents and seniors. This brought a great deal of change in the way they respond to their old Normal. The Old Normal was mostly driven by feudalistic and imperialistic practices. The following were most frequent instances of a pre-pandemic classroom.
- Teachers wouldn’t be expecting “NO” as reply from students
- Teacher wouldn’t be expecting a question as a reply. “WHY” Teacher?
Teacher’s can no longer control them with old tactics of “creating fear of future’, because students are now under the true light of a rational mindset of understanding the relevance on What they have been taught in the classroom.
. Now students can think of the relevance of each and every work they were asked to do before. Now In class the teacher would be thinking how easy it was in Online class where we can simply click on the “ Mute all” box to end the rationality. Since you can Mute all now in the class, we better learn how to “Engage All”.
Since the Otherside Teachers’ image of a prime source of information provider had faded. It is the time for teachers to redefine their role in the classroom. This impact of Early rationality is shackling the Old feudal model. So next time you hear NO from a student he/she is not convinced by your reason. Next you listen to why from a student , understand that he/she wants more reason and want to know the relevance of your lecture to their life. This is going to be the actual “New Normal” for this generation of teachers. Where our feudalistic and missionary way of expectation has to be buried and realize the New Routines in the classroom.
I do agree that not every student thinks as I mentioned above. But remember peer influence is more stronger than teacher influence. And I also want to highlight that the repercussions of Early maturity might be dangerous as well, but we just have to trust the process and start seeing things differently than before, because it is our New Normal.
So How shall we change from the crisis?
Next time,During your class You might have questioned a distracted student as “What are you doing?” For which he/she never gave a true answer. Instead you should try asking “Can I help you?” . This time you might actually get a true answer and their attention.
If you are teaching a history class don’t just tell them the years instead you connect the patterns of rulers of the past with present.
If you are teaching them letter writing don’t forget to teach them how to write an email.
If you are teaching geography don’t forget to use Google maps and have a virtual visit.
If you are teaching arithmetic operations don’t forget to tell them how to code the same.
I think the challenge is yet to come in our classroom. Transition is Difficult, Don’t forget that is how we evolve.
So Is Crisis Good? Yes, In deed.
